About the Experience
This 14-day program is based in Bukedea district in eastern Uganda and focuses on clean water, sanitation, and climate resilience in rural communities. Students work with local teams on water projects, school WASH initiatives, and tree planting while living and learning alongside community leaders and families.
Base locations: Arrival and debrief in Kampala, then stay at a guesthouse in Bukedea town with day visits to surrounding villages and schools.
Support ongoing water and sanitation projects: water tank construction, latrine work, borehole maintenance, and water filter distribution in schools.
Run hygiene education sessions, install handwashing facilities in schools, and help set up student-led WASH clubs.
Join community immersion days in households to understand daily life, water collection, and rural livelihoods, combined with village clean-ups.
Participate in technical workshops on water systems and sustainability, plus sanitary pad production for girls in schools.
Lead awareness campaigns through clean-ups, 'football for water' activities, and radio segments on safe water use and disease prevention.
Climate action focus: Plant up to 3,000 indigenous tree saplings (such as musizi and terminalia species) with local partners as part of a long-term reforestation effort in Bukedea.
